The Office of Historical Corrections
A phenomenal, cohesive collection! I kept promising myself that I would finish just one more story, and then all of a sudden was at the end of the book. Evans’ stories are vividly situated, intricately layered, and sharp. The characters felt so real and present even as they were sketched with only the most necessary details. I am always delighted by the use of the specific and the small to say so much about a character; with one sentence Evans could get to the very heart of a personality. There were so many moments that felt like a punch to the gut—a perfect sentence or surprising situation completely blindsiding me in the best way.
This collection uses intricate, close-up moments in characters’ lives to examine history, its mutability, and its construction. Grief, race, and relationships are strong themes. THE OFFICE OF HISTORICAL CORRECTIONS is a tightly crafted set of well-plotted stories, each illuminating and visceral.
This was a highly anticipated collection for me and I loved every minute of it! If you’re trying to get into short stories or love good storytelling or books that really give you a lot to think about you will definitely like this!
